Meredith came into the studio at five weeks old and made her presence known right away. She was alert, expressive, and full of personality, which made her newborn session incredibly special. While many people imagine newborn sessions as quiet and sleepy, Meredith reminded us that there is just as much beauty in capturing a baby exactly as they are in the moment.
Her parents, Marjory and Duncan, booked their session at the last minute, and I was so glad I was able to get them on the schedule. Those early weeks with a newborn move quickly, and even by five weeks old, babies are already changing and growing at an incredible pace. Meredith had bright, curious eyes and a strong little presence that made slowing down and documenting her details feel even more important.
When planning the session, Meredith’s mom shared that her biggest priority was focusing on her baby’s tiny features rather than heavily posed images. She wanted to remember the small details, the rolls, fingers, toes, and natural expressions that make newborns so special. While she did show examples of gently posed images from my portfolio, the goal was for everything to feel natural and unforced. This approach allowed us to create a gallery with variety while still keeping Meredith comfortable and in control of the session.
We kept the color palette simple with whites and soft neutral tones, which tied in beautifully with Meredith’s nursery colors of light baby pink and white. Neutral newborn photography keeps the focus on your baby and creates timeless images that will still feel just as meaningful years from now.
Meredith was definitely opinionated throughout her session, and that is always welcome in my studio. Newborn sessions are baby led, and following her cues allowed us to capture honest expressions and genuine moments. Some of the sweetest images came from simply giving her space to be herself, whether she was calm, curious, or letting us know she had her own ideas.
In addition to individual portraits, we also captured family images that reflect the connection between Meredith and her parents. Those early days of parenthood are full of quiet, meaningful moments, and photographing those interactions is just as important as documenting the baby alone. The way parents naturally hold their newborn tells a story that becomes even more valuable over time.
Meredith’s newborn session is a great reminder that it is never too late to schedule newborn photos. Whether your baby is just a few days old or several weeks in, there is always value in preserving this stage. These images become a visual reminder of how small they once were and how your family looked during those first weeks together.
