Some of my favorite sessions are the ones that happen a little outside the “typical” newborn photography window. Deacon came to me at one month old for his newborn portrait session, which is often past that dreamy, sleepy stage—but he proved us all wrong. He was an absolute dream, snoozing through so much of his session and letting us capture the sweetest portraits.
This was also a unique session because I had someone shadowing me, learning what goes into newborn photography. Deacon’s mom was so gracious about having them there. At one point, I looked up and laughed because everyone was just staring at me while I worked with Deacon. It made me realize how much of newborn photography is quiet little tricks and gentle patience. His mom even mentioned she picked up a few calming techniques that she could use at home, which felt like such a bonus for her.
For his portraits, we leaned into the classic studio style—soft posing, simple setups, and those timeless images that never go out of style. But when it came time for family portraits, Mom wanted something different. She asked for very simple, non-posed images that captured their connection in a real, natural way. Those turned out to feel more like a lifestyle session, full of authentic moments, cuddles, and love. I absolutely adored how the two styles balanced each other—timeless portraits of Deacon alone and heartfelt, documentary-style images of his family together.
Sessions like this remind me that it’s never too late to capture your little one’s first portraits. Whether your baby is a few days old or a few weeks old, these memories are worth holding onto. You’ll never regret having images that bring you back to these early days.
