Grace’s Newborn Session | NW Arkansas Newborn Photography

NW Arkansas newborn photography

There’s something about NW Arkansas Newborn Photography sessions that don’t go exactly as planned that somehow end up feeling even more meaningful in the end. Sweet little Grace’s session was one of those sessions. 💕

After needing to reschedule twice, once because sickness made its way through the family and another due to mom experiencing some postpartum blood pressure issues, we were finally able to get Grace into the studio just after she turned three weeks old. The timing worked out beautifully in so many ways.

By the time she came in, her jaundice had cleared up quite a bit, she was filling out into those adorable squishy newborn cheeks, and big brother Dawson had a little extra time to adjust to life with a baby sister.

And let me tell you…adjusting was definitely happening. 😂

Mom had warned me beforehand that Dawson was struggling a little with no longer being the center of attention. His preferred coping mechanism? Yelling “MOOOOOOM!” at full toddler volume across the studio. Not a quiet little “mommy?” either. I mean a full production. Tiny human. Huge emotions. It was kind of impressive.

But that’s real life after bringing home a new baby.

That transition into becoming a big sibling can feel enormous for toddlers. One day they have mom and dad all to themselves, and the next there’s a tiny little bundle suddenly taking up everyone’s attention, sleeping in weird places, and somehow getting photographed nonstop. It’s a lot when you’re two years old.

Even with the hesitation, Dawson ended up giving us some of the sweetest sibling moments.

It definitely took some convincing to get him involved in pictures with Grace, but thankfully toddler bribery remains undefeated. Never underestimate the power of puff snacks during a newborn session. Those little snacks basically became our co-photographer for the morning. From hiding puffs in Grace’s wrap to balancing them on her head to keep Dawson interested, we leaned fully into the chaos and somehow created the cutest moments between them.

And those are usually the images parents treasure the most years later.

Not the perfectly posed, everyone-looking-at-the-camera moments.

The real ones.

The toddler curiosity.

The hesitant big brother cuddles.

The little hands reaching out.

The “MOOOOM!” stage that someday becomes part of the family lore everyone laughs about around the dinner table.

Grace herself was such a sweet little girl during her NW Arkansas newborn photography session. Mom envisioned classic newborn and sibling portraits with soft neutrals and pinks, which fit her perfectly. We kept everything timeless and simple, so the focus stayed exactly where it should be, on this brand new little family of four.

One of my favorite things about newborn photography is watching families settle into their new rhythm, even when it’s messy and loud and involves snack negotiations every five minutes. Especially then.

Because those moments deserve to be remembered too.

To the Cathcart family, thank you so much for trusting me with Grace’s newborn portraits after such a stressful start postpartum. I’m so thankful we were able to make the session happen, and I truly loved getting to document this season for your family. Grace is already so loved, and watching Dawson slowly warm up to his new role as big brother was incredibly sweet.

Even if it was occasionally accompanied by yelling. 💗
